Drive by wire is laggy, but this is just not right. Let’s find out what is causing this issue.
Delivery of Fuel:
- Fuel injectors not working 100% effecient
- Fuel Pump (unlikely)
Delivery of Spark:
- Spark plugs are old
- Coil over packs are worn => Mine are new!
- grounding for coil over packs
Timing:
- Timing is not advanced due to using 83 octane fuel instead of 93
- Valve adjustment needs to be done
- Honda’s Vtec for this motor is not like the k20 motor. It’s reverse. R18 Vtec operates around 100o to 3500 RPMs and actually uses a less aggressive cam profile to save gas.
- Knocking => retarding timing (unlikely)
- Skunk2 camshaft has been used with success with other r18s before, but this is said to keep the mild r18 vtec cam lobes for 1000 to 3500 rpms. This would be great for past that.
Air Flow Restrictions:
- Air is hot. Do need a air duct to get cooler air.
- Exhuast leak: Do need to repalce two gaskets
- Air Restrictions: Using HKS air filter, but with oem air box.
- Exhaust Restrictions: Think this would help with 3500+ RPM perfomance. Have SI muffler installed
ECU and Tuning:
- Drive by Wire lag => can be solved by Apexi Smart or any other throttle controller.
- Better fuel map/timing advance could be used, but need to shell out $700 for Hondata.
Steps I'm Taking to Reduce this Bogging Condition
For the next couple weeks want to focus on the low hanging fruit:
- Putting air duct on oem airbox to get cooler air
- Replacing the two exhaust gaskets
- Doing the valve adjustment
- Running injector cleaner
- Trying to use Octane 93 fuel next time or using octane booster
Possible Upgrades to Address this
- Spark Plugs
- Throttle Controller
- Hondata with tune
- Skunk2 camshaft
- Muffler that’s less restrictive
